I'm not a bad person, and I'm not a bully, and I never threatened anybody with a whammy before or since... but I couldn't be cool with anything less than every deterrent I could toss onto the table.
It's not like I thought you would, but I still wanted to say it.
The very first time I talked to Dirge, he asked me how it could be that there were so many humans all over when we're so fragile. I explained that we can manage in almost any environment, and that the requirements for population growth were pretty modest, and that is where he went with it. Go fig.
I know someone told me life is very valuable, and that makes sense to me. But if that life does not belong to me and that life is also in my way of obtaining something else- I would need to get rid of it.
Not only that. [He raises a talon and his optics shine.] There is a way for a life to belong to me that involves death.
If you don't do anything detrimental to anybody, I think we can stay civil. That's something, and since staying civil means we might make more deals in the future, that's something to you. For other information...
[Jadewing has to think about that for a second. Not because he thinks it's a good idea but because the logic of it is just so nonsensical. He raises an optic ridge.]
...And you think that killing someone will make her want to be your friend?
Me too. Not that I wouldn't love to watch you hand that dumb winglet his aft, but I've kinda gotten to like it here, and I don't want him fragging it up for all of us.
Dirge, life is valuable because it's finite. Death is a serious thing. Just because someone might be standing in your way is not a good reason to end their life.
[And that last makes him frown.] What do you mean?
[Jadewing's words are gratifying---he hasn't examples, hasn't evidence, and still takes her seriously? It's something Sam appreciates, and it is almost as satisfying as seeing Dirge step away, afraid.]
I hear you. As much as I'd like to go home, I think I'll make a good go of it here. My only pressing problem? Dirge and his plans.
[Jade's past experiences with magic are people who can sling around ice and fire at will, so yes, he takes magic wielding humans seriously as a potential threat.]
Yeah. He doesn't strike me as the 'fast learner' type. We'll probably have to whack him over the head with 'killing people is a bad move' a few times before it sticks.
[It isn't as flashy as the elemental magics Havenites might observe, but Sam's magic affords her some interesting options. Someday, she may explain her bent for blood and ink. At present? She offers the seeker a smile.]
I'm happy to have your help. It's... not a one-person job, and I never meant to make a bid for dukedom.
Ah, I should say: that's slang. A duke is a lone operator. One might have allies, but they act without the backing of a concrete cabal.
