Having now completed a couple years of it, I'm now pretty sure everyone under a hundred is improvising this 'real adult' stuff. And as for the rest of you? [She grins a crooked little grin, pointing at the camera with a cherry stem.] I've got some suspicions still.

[The broadcast would end there---and does, briefly---but the network's treated to Hiro hijacking Sam's drone to properly inform other Haveners.]

Hey, so, uh, what Sam means is that it's her birthday and she's just being cryptic. So, y'know. Don't let her forget it.

[She starts laughing before she can answer, because it's sort of a story... and one that probably won't surprise Breakdown that much.]

Well, ah, when he first arrived he was treed by a boar live on the network, and I went out to try and make sure this poor kid didn't get mauled after suggesting he wing his drone at it to maybe discourage the damn thing. The boar had been cleared out by the time I got there, thanks to the timely intervention of another tall dude, but there was still this kid who had to hear 'sorry, you're stranded on the far side of space, here's the scoop.' So! I brought him to my place for a sit-down and talking-to, and said he could stay with me if he wanted, or be a neighbour to have help nearby, since he's too young to be all on his own.

Tree’d by a boar, huh? Sounds dirty. [Breakdown, stop, you’re supposed to be the mature one, if based on age alone.]

Sounds like he needed someone to keep him out of trouble, though. I don’t know if you qualify or just end up being a bad influence on the kid.

[Love you, Sam. Can you tell?]

[Just a look, and a mouthed 'what' before Sam laughs and shakes her head.]

I'll have you know I do qualify, and am a bad influence. Keeping him out of trouble and being a bad influence aren't mutually exclusive or anything. Hell, you keep---no, no. You get me out of trouble while being a bad influence, after all.

[He laughs] Yeah, you got a point there. Guess he’s in good enough hand.

Bad influences across the board, but you bet.

...even if I'm a bad influence on Hiro, I might be breaking even overall. Being the first positive human contact for a few people has to count for something.

Heh, there is that. Who else you made a good first impression on? I can’t be the only one when you put it like that.

Knock Out's said he never expected to have a human friend, and given you guys [there are vague hand gestures here, meant to encompass 'with your experience and limited exposure and the MECH shit and stuff'] I'm assuming. Also Acid Storm, when he was here, and Subzero sort of counts, if 'first contact, period, and hey it was positive' qualifies.

I'm not half-bad at this.

That’s a pretty good track record, and yeah, first contact period counts.

I find it pretty funny, on the grounds of how the powers that be---politically, on Earth---would flip their shit on the grounds of someone arguably "underqualified" run---... ambling around, representing humanity.

[She shakes her head, smiling a crooked little smile, then treats Breakdown to the sunniest version of her wise-ass grin he's so far seen.]

Heh, I dunno, decent track record or not, they’d probably be right to “flip their shit” at you.

Luckily for all, I don't think a straight-up bawl-out with the Minister of Foreign Affairs is at all likely.

They'd be a little late to the party at this point anyway. The damage is already done.

[Pleased, she thumps a fist on her sternum and fans her hand, palm-up, as she moves it away. The message is clear: 'the best and worst' is exactly what he has here.]

Oh, I will. Don't be surprised if I drop by to spend some of of it bugging you, maybe to go tear-assing around.
