[The feed cuts in mid-shriek, Sam’s drone apparently having interpreted the start of the sound as its cue to begin broadcasting. It shows the adept pushing herself to her feet, having been knocked to her hands and knees by---what? Water. She’s drenched to dripping, and the street she stands on is wet for several metres all around.]

Calvaire de crisse...!

[It’s no more than a mutter as she straightens and immediately starts for the shelter of the closest building, casting an anxious glance up as she goes. She’s through a doorway in a matter of moments due to making haste, and relaxes---marginally---as she moves further away from the entrance.]

You don't have to apologize. [If you want to start a swear jar, Hiro, start a swear jar. What will go into it? Nobody knows. Probably buttons, lint, and small pieces of string.] Now I'm giving you flak because it's what I do, and because I have to make some kind of crack. But, for the record: I shower. I even go swimming, sometimes. And water won't melt me.

It's sort of a dumb idea, though. Like, having to give up tools so I didn't use any high school vocabulary around the house. Dumb. [He says it so fondly, though, that it's clear he doesn't actually believe it's that dumb.]

[She snorts, amused by the audible affection, but then grows fairly serious.]

Yeah. Maybe not specifically that movie, but the ideas it's helped perpetuate, and so now I can say I made it through an attempted murder.

...well, that's pretty cool. How many people can say that?

[Swallowing back a laugh, because it's a LITTLE bit funny, Sam, c'mon, then getting serious.] Got any idea who it was?

I know, right? I ever need one again, I'm going to have a kickass resume.

[Fairly serious. Even if the subject's a sobering one, it's difficult to avoid including a crack here or there while talking to Hiro---probably because (terrible) jokes and (worse) puns constitute a lot of their communication.]

I have a very good idea who it was, since I've only ever had trouble with Dirge, here.

[Ohhh, it was Dirge. Hiro should honestly be taking this more seriously, but he can't stifle another laugh.] Wait, so, why is Dirge trying to melt you? Doesn't he have like...weird digestion-capable-robot things to do?

Still basking in it to be honest, but probably because he and I have been pissing each other off for a long time and, having been haunted for one week, he has concluded that killing me is no longer not worth the trouble. I am consequently concerned.

And ready to take his tongue out through his teeth.

Uh, I always thought you guys were sort of...weird...always-arguing friends. Honestly.

Not really, but I had a doppelgänger haunting him. What's this 'you, too' business?

We agreed on 'acquaintances'. It's complicated, though a little less so now.

I think he's sort of funny. But that was before he tried killing you and stuff. [Hiro is nothing if not loyal.]

[Have a scowl, Sam.] I do fine when I have warning. Are you really that worried about the guy? I mean, his first attack was literally just a bucket of water...

Possibly because we've been pissing each other off for a while, but it's hard to say. And fine, fine, don't get defensive.

Yes and no. On one hand, he's come close to stomping on me before and is perfectly willing to eat people. On the other, so long as he doesn't just blindside me, I should be able to hold out until help arrives.

[It isn't always easy to tell over video; no auras to help her.]

[He could totally pull it off, if necessary, that's not the problem. He wants to know if he'll get grounded for the suggestion.]

You are serious. That's sweet. Really sweet, in a very specific way... which I still appreciate. Immensely.

[It's a very specific sort of sweet but it resonates with her; it wasn't long ago that she'd offered to blind Airachnid for Breakdown.]

But I'm going to say no, I don't want you to try and blow him up. It's not worth the trouble you could get in, and I don't think I could be okay with you blowing someone up on my behalf.

[Awww, Sam, you made him blush. And fidget and shrug and rake his fingers back through his hair.]

I-It's no big deal. I mean, I could always make something loud and flashy, but not actually do any damage. If you wanted.

[Now that's precious---especially considering how quickly it's come after an offer to blow someone up for her personal security and peace of mind.]

Something in the spirit of a flash-bang grenade? I'm going to be keeping that in mind---never hurts to hold some cards. But, I should be stopping in to the apartment soon, and then I'm ducking out to the spa. Are you going to be in to talk for a bit before I go?

Yeah. If he graduates to something more deadly than water.

[Hiro doesn't even remotely have the words to articulate it, but it comes down to: Sam is family, and you protect your family.

The question gets a shrug and a nod.] I'm pretty much always in. [His own personal haunting didn't usually follow him inside the apartment.]

Sounds good, and okay, I'll be there in a bit.

[It isn't long after the locked exchange (maybe ten, twelve minutes) that the apartment's door can be heard opening, and then clicking closed. Should Hiro go to greet his roommate, on account of expecting her---

---he'll see a stranger.]

[Sam should really take it as a good thing that Hiro's first reaction is one that demonstrates he's protective of his new home --

-- he immediately grabs the toaster and throws it at the intruder, yelling something unintelligible, but hopefully intimidating.]

Oh, shit! [Startled, Sam bats the toaster aside, and it crashes to the floor with a snap-sproing-rattle that doesn't bode well at all. There's time to think great there goes the second toaster somewhere under all her what the hell and then it hits: the Ruse hasn't yet timed out, and she didn't drop it.] Shit.

[And, abruptly, what was unfamiliar resolves itself into the recognized---somehow, without involving an actual change. It's a little like recognizing someone's old, old photo, or a family resemblance, only much... more, and in a way, worse, because so many features simply failing to register is nonsensical stuff.]

[It's fortunate that Sam chooses to make herself known (however that works) when she does, because Hiro has the coffee machine hefted up over his head and is about .5 seconds from throwing that too.

Once he registers who it is, however, he freezes, brow furrowed, appliance still held up threateningly.]

....explain, please.
