Trust the Midas touch... or not.[video]

[The camera shows a closeup of a grumpy-looking Jade.]

Yeah, so... you know that gold paint I found?

[The camera pulls back to reveal that half the things in Jadewing's apartment are gold. Or at least gold colored. Including a few of the floor panels. As the camera rolls, Jadewing picks up a random bolt from his golden desk. The bolt suddenly becomes golden as well.]

Yeah... the miasma's messing with us again. Any idea how I make this stop?

No such luck; they'd be heavier if they were solid gold. They're just getting gold-plated.

That's not a bad bit of luck, in and of itself. Means if there's something you really need restored, I might be able to manage. Whatever it was would be as susceptible to getting a second coat if you were to touch it again, but if you accidentally touch something and it results in an emergency....

Not when you can't control it it's not. It's completely random.

[He demonstrates by picking up a small number of other bolts, nuts, and screws from his desk. Only about half of them turn golden.]

Part of why I'm so annoyed. I know the basic plot of the human myth, and I'd rather not end up gold plating someone because they accidentally bump into me.

Guess we'll both have to be careful what... and especially who we touch til this wears off. I know how the human myth about this goes, and I'd rather not experience the real thing.

Anyway, no, no pattern that I can see. Sometimes stuff changes on the first touch. Other times it takes two or three for it to work. I've gotten up to five touches with no change on a couple of occasions, but I can't tell if those are flukes or not.

[The camera pans down a bit to the surface of the desk. There are piles of now-golden nuts, bolts and screws arranged there, as well as a couple smallish golden bins containing unchanged ones. Clearly Jade has been experimenting a bit.]

Short of avoiding touching anyone til this wears off? Not that I can see. I doubt I'll get a convenient escape clause like the king in the human myth.

...hmmmm. Does it only work on small things? Or only when you use your hand? What about stepping on things?

Well, given that I accidentally gilded my desk and several floor panels, I'm guessing that the answer to both those questions is 'no'.

Which only makes it more dangerous, especially to organics.

[Jadewing thinks a moment, obviously along the same lines as Breakdown.]

Most likely you did the right think. The miasma hasn't ever changed someone's personality before. Gotten them overcharged or made them laugh uncontrollably, yeah, but it hasn't made anyone unrecognizable.

[Yeah, paint would probably just be counted as part of his body. Jade has noticed the gloves, though.]

Don't suppose you've got a spare pair of those gloves on hand?

[It takes a moment before he realizes the pun he unintentionally made, and chuckles slightly]

Metaphorically speaking, I mean.

[That pretty much tells him what he needs to know.]
