The wager boils down to 'If I don't believe in and so ignore this juju-y thing, and it turns out to be legit, I'll lose out. If I don't believe in this juju-y thing, and there's nothing to it, I'll just stay where I started. If I do believe in and so observe the thing, and it's nothing, I'll still stay where I started. If I believe in and so observe the thing, and it is legit, I'll benefit. Conclusion: I might as well observe the thing!'

Well, you have a large portion of the population partying from one night and on to the next day. The majority are gonna be sleep-deprived, hungover, or both, and the people who aren't are probably standing by, shaking their heads. Nobody's getting a whole lot of anything done New Year's Day, unless their 'something' to do is sleeping.
