[The feed cuts in mid-shriek, Sam’s drone apparently having interpreted the start of the sound as its cue to begin broadcasting. It shows the adept pushing herself to her feet, having been knocked to her hands and knees by---what? Water. She’s drenched to dripping, and the street she stands on is wet for several metres all around.]

Calvaire de crisse...!

[It’s no more than a mutter as she straightens and immediately starts for the shelter of the closest building, casting an anxious glance up as she goes. She’s through a doorway in a matter of moments due to making haste, and relaxes---marginally---as she moves further away from the entrance.]

[He's gong to go deal with Dirge. Stompstompstomp...his drone follows behind him.]

That's... pretty much the plan for my immediate future.

[But she'll leave it at that, since Breakdown is obviously a mech on a mission.]

[And a short time later his drone will cut the feed.]

It's sort of a dumb idea, though. Like, having to give up tools so I didn't use any high school vocabulary around the house. Dumb. [He says it so fondly, though, that it's clear he doesn't actually believe it's that dumb.]

...so someone tried to assassinate you...based on a movie from a hundred years ago. [He's not laughing, nope, definitely not laughing.]

[She snorts, amused by the audible affection, but then grows fairly serious.]

Yeah. Maybe not specifically that movie, but the ideas it's helped perpetuate, and so now I can say I made it through an attempted murder.

[A little later---perhaps even before the Seeker leaves the scene---Dirge's ill-used drone chimes; there's new network content flagged for him.]

Hmmm?

[Dirge turns, grabbing the thing and using the 'show new content' command.]

[It's an addition to the original, unintentional footage--Sam, still wet, and obviously angry.]

You! What in the fresh hell?! I thought we were going to be able to get along, then you give this shit a shot!

...well, that's pretty cool. How many people can say that?

[Swallowing back a laugh, because it's a LITTLE bit funny, Sam, c'mon, then getting serious.] Got any idea who it was?

I know, right? I ever need one again, I'm going to have a kickass resume.

[Fairly serious. Even if the subject's a sobering one, it's difficult to avoid including a crack here or there while talking to Hiro---probably because (terrible) jokes and (worse) puns constitute a lot of their communication.]

I have a very good idea who it was, since I've only ever had trouble with Dirge, here.

[He looks quite surprised to see her, dropping the drone and letting it float a few feet away.]

I have no idea what 'shit' is, but I'm pretty sure I didn't give it a shot.

[His replies flippantly, while trying to think of something better to say.]

[That look alone is telling---it's easy to imagine the accompanying flare in his aura.]

It was your fly-by soaking, I'm sure. Bet you thought it was a smart idea.

[Ohhh, it was Dirge. Hiro should honestly be taking this more seriously, but he can't stifle another laugh.] Wait, so, why is Dirge trying to melt you? Doesn't he have like...weird digestion-capable-robot things to do?

Still basking in it to be honest, but probably because he and I have been pissing each other off for a long time and, having been haunted for one week, he has concluded that killing me is no longer not worth the trouble. I am consequently concerned.

And ready to take his tongue out through his teeth.

-- you got haunted too? [Whoops, there's a minor slip, better cover that up by immediately going onto the next subject.]

Uh, I always thought you guys were sort of...weird...always-arguing friends. Honestly.

It was a mistake! [Sam snaps, bristling. She draws a breath, feeling for composure, and finds it in asking] Give me one good reason I shouldn't call the cops on you?

We agreed on 'acquaintances'. It's complicated, though a little less so now.

[She lifts her hands, before letting them swing to her sides.]

I'm not afraid of you anymore, Sam Witch. I know how to get rid of ghosts. [He looks oh so smug.]

Do you? Those weren't real ghosts, Dirge---they were manifestations from the Miasma, and I'm not dumb; I gave you a quick fix.

[Sam actually flashes a sharp smile in making this admission, throwing the last two words out as she uncrosses her bare and goosebumped arms.]

You were afraid of me, and you're going to be again. I may not be able to trash you out going toe to toe, but that doesn't mean I can't trash you out.

[The seeker's smug smile is infuriating---she can feel a fresh heat in her cheeks, and is again aware of the charges simmering in her skin. Eyes alight and teeth on edge, she focuses on that pulse of possibility and pushes. There's some resistance---it's almost an inertia---but no, this will happen, is happening: Sam lifts a hand to shoulder height, snaps it shut, and something shifts. It's nothing Dirge would notice as he's only standing and speaking, but it happens all the same and Sam smiles again, made sure by the queer sense of calcification. It's done.]

I warned you once, said I'd give you grief.

I think he's sort of funny. But that was before he tried killing you and stuff. [Hiro is nothing if not loyal.]
